Sugar Industry Pumps

Types of Pumps Used in Sugar Industry

Typical sugar plant pump applications include:

  • Juice extraction and clarification – transferring beet juice, lime slurry, and clarifier mud.
  • Evaporation and crystallization – circulating viscous sugar syrup and massecuite.
  • Molasses and centrifuge feed – handling thick, sticky fluids efficiently and reliably.
  • Filtration and wastewater systems – supporting condensate return, washdown, and water recycling.
  • Utilities and plant service – transferring process water and other general fluids across the facility.

With a broad selection of rugged, high-efficiency pumps, Edelmann helps sugar producers improve uptime, reduce energy costs, and maintain consistent product quality. Your application will determine which type of pump to use for sugar processing – centrifugal, positive displacement,  injection, dosing & metering, slurry, rotary – Edelmann can help you choose the best pump for your application.

We partner with leading pump manufacturers like ITT Goulds Pumps and Viking Pump to ensure your sugar plant’s pumping systems deliver lasting performance season after season.

Edelmann Sugar Pump Case Study

The Edelmann Team recently collaborated with a customer to size, select and fabricate two large Goulds 3196 i-17 ANSI complete pump units for liquid sugar processing.

The pumps are CD4MCuN material to handle the abrasive nature of the sugar and in conjunction with the 150 HP electric motors will deliver 1400 GPM.

The pump units were assembled from kits with mechanical seals installed, air tested, and mounted on baseplates with motors and couplings, and laser aligned prior to complete unit shipment from the Edelmann Shop in Plymouth, MN.

The Edelmann Sales and Applications teams are ready to assist you with your toughest liquid handling challenges to keep your processes moving.  We know Sugar Processing!

Specific Viking Sugar Pump Recommendations

The following pumps are recommended for sugar applications.

1224A-SUG  Series

  • Cast Iron
  • Jacketed for steam / oil prior to pump startup
  • Leak prevention with O-Pro® Barrier Seal
  • Capacities to 500 GPM

1224A-SUG  Series

  • Stainless Steel Externals
  • Leak prevention with O-Pro® Barrier Seal
  • Jacketed for steam / oil prior to pump startup
  • Capacities to 320 GPM

O-PRO® BARRIER SEAL TECHNOLOGY is a critical component of leak free sugar pumps.

  • Replaces packing or mechanical seal by occupying the internal bracket cavity with a machined seal gland
  • Utilizes O-rings to seal externally on the bracket and internally on the shaft.
  • Contains lubrication between the shaft and bushing reducing wear.
  • A combination of O-rings and lubricating fluid provide a robust seal preventing process fluid from leaking out of the pump.
